Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had allowed a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or did there exist a thread maintaining its structure from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, before he publicly stated that the club had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for accounting issues. Reports that he could resign were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy on the pitch as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it has been hard to tell if they are improving or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Comeback

A single player remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this season. He completed the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his owning club were advocating for him to remain there for another season. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

He joined originally when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."

Uncovering His True Position

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to work out the exact type of the player's talent. Originally described as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
